Kalam honours students who excelled in science exhibition

Former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam on Sunday honoured school students who excelled in the India 2020 science exhibition organised here by the Lead India Foundation.

Of the 64 schools in the city that took part in the expo, nine were Government schools, one was a Corporation school and 14 were Government aided ones, Chief Education Officer A. Gnanagowri noted with pride.

The topics for the expo were resources of renewable energy, reclamation of water bodies in Coimbatore City, rainwater harvesting and community health and hygiene.

A total of 175 teams, each comprising two students, took part.

The students came up with models which were displayed at the exhibition.

A total of 26 exhibits were shortlisted. Mr. Kalam, accompanied by K. Vijay Kumar, Senior Security Adviser to the Union Home Ministry, visited the science expo held at Avinashilingam University here on Sunday and selected the winners.

The former President gave his autographed book ‘My journey - Transforming Dream into Actions’ to all the toppers in Plus Two and Class X public examinations of the Corporation and Government Schools here.

T.S.K. Meenakshi Sundaram, Chancellor, Avinashilingam University, C.R. Swaminathan, president, Lead India 2020 Foundation, J. Sathish Kumar, State Co-ordinator, and M.N. Padmanabhan, secretary, spoke.

S. Sowmiyaa and P. Lathaa from R.C. Government Girls Higher Secondary School bagged the first prize in the topic ‘reclamation of water bodies in Coimbatore city’

M. Purnima and S. Keerthana of Sri Avinashilingam Higher Secondary School for Girls bagged the top honours in ‘resources of renewable energy.' A. Akila and S.M. Initha of Kadri Mills Higher Secondary School stood first in ‘rainwater harvesting’.

In the ‘community health and hygiene’ topic, V. Pawn Kumar Mitruka and J. Rahul Prasad Jaiswal of Kikani Vidhya Mandir came first.

The State first ranker in the Plus-Two examinations, S. Sushanthi from Krishnagiri district, was also felicitated by Mr. Kalam who presented her with a tablet computing device and a certificate of appreciation.
