Judges conduct inquiry at Central Prison

April 21, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:36 am IST - COIMBATORE:

It is learnt that two judges from the sub-ordinate judiciary conducted an inquiry with three convicts in the Coimbatore Central Prison here, on Saturday, following allegations that the prison inmates were harassed by the prison authorities, recently.

Lawyers K. Tholkappiyan and R. Kannadasan said this after meeting the convicts who were shown in the video.

Mr. Tholkappiyan said that this was parallel to the inquiry conducted by the DIG of Prisons for Vellore Range V.M. Mohammed Hanifa at the Coimbatore Central Prison from last Friday. He also quoted the convicts as saying that the DIG was yet to conduct an inquiry with them. “The three are still in the same block where they were reportedly kept under solitary confinement,” he claimed.

The lawyers also alleged that the prison authorities were yet to trace the person who managed to carry a video recording device into the prison and recorded the activities of the three convicts.

The lawyer said that he would be meeting a few more inmates lodged in the same block on Tuesday.
