JCC expresses displeasure over BU functioning

Streamline distance education programmes, says council

The Joint Coordination Council of the Bharathiar University has expressed its displeasure over the way the Bharathiar University functions. In a release the JCC says the university conducting walk-in interviews for recruiting persons to teaching and non-teaching positions goes against a government order issued on appointments for State universities.

The JCC, which comprises Association of University Teachers and Tamilnadu Government College Teachers’ Association, demands that walk-in interview practise be discontinued.

The practise of making ad hoc appointments for statutory positions like the Controller of Examinations, Dean, College Development Council, NSS Coordinator, etc. and giving additional charges to existing faculty will only pave way for inefficiency.

The JCC wants the University administration to make permanent appointments for these positions.

The university administration has not followed a Madras High Court order which says that the university must implement the UGC salary scale for teaching staff in self-financed colleges. The JCC wants the university to immediately abide by the court order.

The JCC also wants the university to streamline its distance education programmes, adhere to the UGC norms in awarding Ph.D. degrees, to bring about a transparent functioning in the office of the Research Coordinator, dispense with evaluation of Ph.D. theses by foreign examiners and follow rules in granting affiliations to colleges.

It says that the university continues to accept affiliation applications from colleges even after the start of the academic year.

This only leads to nepotism and corruption, which should be stopped.

Though the JCC has taken the aforementioned matters to the knowledge of the Vice-Chancellor there has been no remedy. If such inaction continues, the JCC will be forced to resort to protest and agitation, says the release.
