After some high octane and adrenaline pumping action in the JK Tyre National Racing, Rallying and Drag Racing Championship, the city is now all set to witness another top quality show in the form of the MRF MoGrip - FMSCI National Supercross Championship this weekend.

Supercross championship is a motorsport event that involves off-road motorcycles on an artificially created dirt track consisting of steep jumps and obstacles.

The 10th edition of the MRF championship scheduled at the Technical Institute Grounds on Avanashi Road promises to dish out the very best in motorsport action for the spectators this Sunday.

More than 100 riders have confirmed participation for the Coimbatore event, which is fast gaining popularity across the country. About 20,000 spectators thronged the venues last year leading to an increase in participation and growing involvement and support from corporate houses.

The riders have always enjoyed the support from the Coimbatore spectators. They say it is this support that brings out the best in them.

The last edition here was on a makeshift track near the CODISSIA Trade Fair Complex, but this time around it has been shifted to a new venue.

The Technical Institute track is about 800m in length with 25 jumps, a step-up jump, whoops and berms. “It’s going to be a technically demanding track, very close to the ones you see abroad. The soil here is much harder and the relatively hot condition will certainly test the riders,” said Chivas of GODSPEED (Pune), the organisers of the six-round championship.

Pune’s Shyam Kothari, the man behind the big-time event, had done the design part of the track. He has been organising national Supercross and Motorcross championships in India for over a decade. He knows how much it takes to organise an event of this magnitude.

The Pune men have also got a huge amount of support from Southern Manchester Racing Club (Coimbatore). Close to 40 thoroughbred motocross motorcycles will be in seen in action in the rechristened SX1 and SX2 categories, while the newly introduced junior SX category is exclusively for riders below 15 years. So, it’s time to be there and encourage the big boys of Supercross to up their pace.
