Irate residents ransack liquor shop

Residents enter the shop and destroy liquor bottles

Disgusted residents of Alamarakadu ransacked a liquor shop and took away the liquor bottles and broke it on the road here on Monday.

They were protesting against the relocation of shop from Five Road area to Alamarakadu. Recently, residents and youths staged protest as the police assured that the shop will not be opened in its new location. On Monday, liquor bottles arrived in the shop. Angered by it, residents came to the shop and took the bottles and broke it. Police arrived on the spot and chased the protesters. The police picked up five persons on the charges of damaging the bottles. Pallapatti police are inquiring.

Likewise opposing the opening of shop in their area, villagers staged road block at two places in Edappadi. School students also joined their protest as the police later removed 50 people.

On Sunday, members of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) and All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) staged a demonstration demanding the closure of the Tasmac outlet functioning in Swarnapuri in the city. They said that the shop is kept open in violation of the Supreme Court order. They marched in a procession from Meyyanur to Swarnapuri and staged demonstration. Officials informed them that the authorities were on the lookout for a suitable site and assured to shift the shop from the present venue soon, following which they dispersed peacefully.

In Tiruchengodu in Namakkal district, villagers of Anangoor demanded that Tasmac shop functioning in Kattur be removed. They also wanted the new shop not to be opened in the same village. Both men and women picketed these shops and staged protest.
