INTACH welcomes decision

October 25, 2014 01:16 pm | Updated May 23, 2016 04:30 pm IST - COIMBATORE:

The Coimbatore Chapter of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) has welcomed the decision to demolish the more than 100-year-old colonial building and construct a new building to house the District Police Office.

Co-convenor of INTACH, Coimbatore, S. Ramachandran Prasad told The Hindu that heritage buildings have to be preserved.

“On the other hand we don’t want to block a multi-facilitated DPO that would benefit the public. The existing building is weak and needs to be demolished and reconstructed,” Mr. Prasad said.

He recalled that their organisation has played a key role in opposing demolition of other heritage structures in the city.
