A two-year-old female elephant with injuries in cavities and a fracture died on Friday morning on the Coimbatore – Mannarkad road near the Mangarai check-post in Thadagam valley.

According to Forest Department sources, a six-member herd, including a two-year-old female calf, had been moving around Pannimadai, Ponnuthaman hills area in Thadagam Valley for the last three weeks.

A fortnight ago, villagers reported that a calf in the herd was seen with injuries in the mouth and efforts began to track the herd for rendering medical aid to the calf.

On Friday morning, the herd was crossing the road when the calf collapsed on the roadside.

Tamed/trained kumki elephant Sujay was brought from the Chadivayal elephant camp for keeping the herd at bay.

Finally, the officials commenced treatment but in vain.
