Beneath the Avinashi Road flyover near the S.S. Mill Road Junction is a pit standing testimony to the Coimbatore Corporation’s efficiency.
It has been there for the past three months, ever since the Corporation dug the pit to execute the storm water drainage work in Ward 72.
The Corporation was supposed to link the storm water drain from the northern side of the flyover to the southern side, and take it through the transport corporation’s depot there.
The civic body, however, seems to have abandoned the work, leaving the pit open.
Hardship
The presence of the pit poses great hardship to the road users, who are caught unawares as they move on to the road from the subway, say road users.
After seeing the pit ahead, riders and drivers are forced to take either a sharp right or left turn which affects other road users.
It also affects the flow of traffic as people move north or south to avoid the pit, congesting the limited available place. There have been instances of two-wheeler riders falling into the pit and cars getting stuck.
It is a frequent occurrence, says Bansi Lal, who runs a hardware store in the area. The absence of street light at the spot only adds to the road users’ woes.
M. Murugan, an autorickshaw driver, also has a similar story to narrate. Every time vehicles get stuck, the autorickshaw drivers are forced to run to the rescue.
The drivers say that they, along with the traders of the area, have appealed to the authorities concerned, but to no avail.
Ward 72 Councillor J. Sasirekha was not available for comment.
Sources in the JNNURM wing of the Corporation say that the civic body awaited the transport corporation’s permission for further executing the work because the latter has said that the work will affect the turning radius for buses and the drivers will not be able to move the vehicle inside the depot.
The Corporation has also said that it would make alternative arrangements for the buses to enter the premises and thereafter the Corporation could take up the work.
But the civic body is yet to hear from the Corporation, the sources add.
