Joint Action Committee of Coimbatore District Autorickshaw Workers’ Unions has demanded that the district administration take immediate steps to implement the meter fare system here.
In a petition submitted during the public grievance redress meeting at Coimbatore Collectorate on Monday, P.K. Sukumaran, president of the Joint Action Committee, said that the livelihood of around 12,000 autorickshaw drivers in Coimbatore was affected by the delay. Autorickshaws were facing threat from share autos, and call taxis. The committee termed the fare levels fixed for Chennai “as inadequate” and failing to reflect the repeated raise in fuel prices in recent years. It urged the Tamil Nadu Government to follow the Supreme Court’s directive to fix new fares across the State after consultations.
The Government had announced that the fares in districts other than Chennai would be fixed after the respective District Collectors held consultations with the trade unions. This must be expedited, Mr. Sukumaran said, as such a meeting held by the Coimbatore district administration on September 24 failed to produce tangible results so far.
Old-age pension
A group of 150 senior citizens residing at Poorandampalayam have complained to the district administration that their old age pensions were not disbursed for the last few months.
In a petition, S. Gopalsamy, one of the residents, said that no reply was given to a query filed under the Right to Information Act.
Considering the advanced age of the petitioners, he urged the district administration to take immediate steps for disbursing the Old Age Pension.
Tasmac outlet
Puratchi Thalaivar M.G.R. Makkal Munnetra Kazhgam has urged the district administration to relocate a Tasmac liquor outlet located near a library named after former Chief Minister K. Kamaraj.
