Residents of Arul Nagar Garden in Ward 45 petitioned the Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner on Tuesday complaining about poor amenities.

The residents said the first issue the civic body must address was poor drainage construction.

Around one-and-half years ago, the corporation constructed drains in all the five streets that formed the Arul Nagar Garden. Since the time it completed the work and sewage started flowing in, the locality’s hygiene had taken a hit in that the sewage stagnated. Every 15 days or so, the corporation would send lorries to clean the stagnant drain by removing silt. But in the three months, it failed to clean the drains. As a result, sewage started flowing onto the road.

If only the corporation had given proper sloping to the drainage, the sewage would have flowed down to the Sanganoor Canal, which was just south of their locality.

The corporation’s supply of drinking and ground water was also a cause for concern, the residents said. In the absence of public taps, it was difficult for the residents to fetch ground water, the supply of which, in any case, was very poor. The supply of potable water too was bad in that the water just trickled in. The residents said they had petitioned the Commissioner sometime in December 2016 but there was no relief. Then they took up the issue with the Central Zone Assistant Commissioner and finally District Collector. Even then, relief eluded them. Finally, they had approached the Commissioner, again. If the corporation did not resolve the issues, they would stage a protest by blocking the Thayir Itteri Road.

Sources in the civic body said that there was a proposal to rebuild the drains that were constructed around five years ago under the JNNURM scheme. The corporation had sanctioned ₹ 9.90 lakh for the purpose and it would soon begin the work.

They sources said the civic body would also address their water needs as well.
