Coimbatore Corporation will in the next few days resume work at the sewage treatment plant in Nanjundapuram as it has secured the green signal from the Southern Bench of the National Green Tribunal.
According to Commissioner K. Vijayakarthikeyan, the civic body managed to get the signal by overcoming the objections raised by way of writ petitions by residential associations.
Dr. Vijayakarthikeyan said following the green signal, he had instructed officials to resume work at the earliest.
The Association had filed two writ petitions in 2011 before the Court, which transferred the case to the Tribunal. Its contention was that the civic body had violated rules as the STP fell within the 500m limitation fixed by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board.
The Corporation had proposed to treat 45.29 million litres a day sewage.
In April 2013, the Corporation had taken steps to resume the work by increasing the payment to the contractor concerned by Rs. 17.50 crore as the delay in completing the work had led to cost escalation.
Then it had said that there was a delay of 42 months due to the litigation. The work had come to a halt on April 28, 2009, as the Association had moved the court.
