Hundreds take part in mini marathon to mark Disability Day

Around 1,250 people took part in the Covai Mini Marathon 2014 for differently abled persons organised in the city on Sunday to mark the World Disability Day.

Intended to raise awareness on education and inclusion of differently abled persons, the event was split into four categories.

Unlike other such events, this was open to everyone. Besides an open category, there was one for visually challenged, another for hearing impaired and the last category was for persons with various other disabilities. The cash awards and prizes in the name of the late industrialist N. Mahalingam, totalled Rs. 60,000.

The winners in the open group was S. Victorsamuel Rajan in the men’s category and S. Padamavathi in the women’s category;

In the hearing impaired group, it was Rajkumar and K. Shenbargam.

The winners in the visually challenged group are S. Sankar and Priya; and in group for other disabilities, it was Nishanth.

The event was organised by Deaf Leaders Foundation in collaboration with the Bharathiar University’s Department of Social Work, Coimbatore District Athletic Association, Rotaract Club of Coimbatore and various colleges and universities.
