Non-governmental organisation Nizhal Maiyam volunteers in association with school and college students and members of a few other organisations on Sunday formed a human chain to create awareness on the use of the national flag.

B. Murugan of Nizhal Maiyam says that the organisation decided to conduct such a programme after its volunteers noticed people disrespecting flags by abandoning them on roads after observing Republic Day, Independence Day and a few other events and using plastic flags.

On several occasions, the volunteers had collected the flags and kept them safe. This time they decided to hold the event ahead of the Republic Day to bring about awareness among the people so that they use the flag with respect. The students, who participated, held placards carrying messages on how the flag ought to be used.

They also distributed a few handbills to passers-by in Kavundampalayam and Gounder Mills.
