A hospital here in partnership with a U.S. firm is all set to a mobile stroke unit.
The ambulance will have a battery powered CT scanner, facility to provide treatment on the go, and tele-radiology for live transmission from the vehicle to the hospital.
Chief of Radiology Services of Kovai Medical Center and Hospital Mathew Cherian said that the ambulance will cost about Rs. 5 crore. It is getting fabricated under the supervision of Schiller – the U.S.-based firm. Dr. Cherian said that commissioning the unit will help in early detection of stroke symptoms, and begin the treatment.
The ambulance will cover 100 km from the city.
“We are trying to have tie-ups with ambulance operators to reach out to patients at far away places. When a stroke patient from a far away place is on his way to the hospital, the new ambulance too will pick him up from the other ambulance on the way and start treatment to save time,” he said.
The vehicle will have a team comprising a doctor, a nurse, a respiratory therapist, and a driver (who will also be a trained paramedic).
