The State Highways Department plans to start works soon to re-lay the four-km stretch from Lakshmi Mills junction to the bridge on Nanjundapuram Road (road over bridge).
An official of the department told The Hindu that the bids received for the tender for the project have been finalised and the total project cost is Rs. 6 crore.
Badly damaged
The road is badly damaged in some places, especially on the stretch from Ramanathapuram junction to the road overbridge. The proposal is to re-lay it completely.
After the works commence, it will be completed in a month since traffic flow is high on the road.
The Highways Department has requested the Corporation to work on the manholes as the road height will increase when the project is completed.
The department has also placed orders for materials and it is waiting for delivery of the same. Works are expected to start in a week to 10 days, the official added.
Road users are waiting for the department to take up the works as accidents are frequent and common on the stretch.
K. Karuppusamy, resident of Nanjundapuram, says that at least four or five motorists fall from the vehicles every day and tyres of cars are damaged because of the poor condition of the road.
“The public do not know to whom they should submit their grievance,” he says.
N. K. Ashok Kumar, former counsellor of Coimbatore Corporation, says the condition of the road has worsened during the last couple of months.
With opening up of the road overbridge, the number of vehicles using the road has increased.
The Highways department should at least take temporary measures to fill the potholes.
Since medians are placed on the stretch, the road is narrow in several places between Ramanathapuram junction and the road over bridge. It has to be widened too.
