In an attempt to simplify the procedures involved in availing education loans for Plus-Two students, Coimbatore District Collector M. Karunagaran, convened a meeting of principals of Higher Secondary Schools in the district and representatives of banks at Mani High School on Thursday.

Principals from 292 schools in the district and officials from banks participated. Mr. Karunagaran said that though 7,506 students were provided education loans worth Rs.149.76 last year, generally students faced a lot of difficulties in availing loans from banks.

According to him, the initiative was to make sure that no eligible student would not be denied opportunity for higher education due to economic difficulties.

He said that 10 top scorers from each school would be provided loans through banks under this initiative.

The imitative would also aid other eligible students to get education loans from banks.

The procedures involved in availing education loans were discussed at the meeting and the banks were asked to make loans available to eligible students.

Mr. Karunagaran said that students should be made aware of the terms and procedures involved in availing education loans. They should know that no interest would be charged for students who were below a particular income limit.

T. Rajendhiran, chief education officer, Coimbatore, Vasantha, Corporation Education Officer, and representatives from various banks including Canara Bank, Indian Bank and Indian Overseas Bank were present.
