Help pours in for flood victims

Various organisations in Coimbatore and The Nilgiris districts have extended help to flood affected people of Chennai.

A team of 25 doctors and 15 paramedics from PSG Hospitals with medicines for Rs. 5 lakh will assist the government’s health department officials in the flood relief works in Chennai. The alumni association of PSG Institutions will also distribute 1000 garments, 6000 blankets, and 6000 dhoties to people in Cuddalore district. PSG Alumini Association had been distributing 5,000 packets of food per day in Chennai, for the past few days. Management, staff and faculty members of PSG institutes will also donate Rs. 1 crore to the Chief Minister’s Relief fund, according to the press release.

The Nilgiri Documentation Centre has taken an initiative to coordinate with residents of The Nilgiris to extend help to the people of Chennai. The organisation will collect cash, tea bags, varkies and other confectioneries, vegetables, sweets and chocolates, and clothes. Nilgiri Nakkubetta Nala Sangam has made an appeal to people of the district to donate food items and other essential commodities at the NCMS premises near Chairing Cross. President of the association T.B. Raman has made an appeal to volunteers to consider requirements of a common man and students and to make contributions. He can be reached over phone at 9442070567.

Another organization called Runboy is collecting food products such as breads, buns, biscuits, jams, pickles, drinking water, clothes, blankets and medicines. It is working across Madurai, Erode, Tirupur and Tiruchi.

Praveen Nandagopal and his team of volunteers are collecting biscuits, blankets, towels and medicines. He says he has used Whatsapp and Facebook to get in touch with his friends and now he has around 300 to 400 volunteers to help him out. “I am even getting calls from abroad from people who are ready to transfer the money into my account!” he says. The rescue teams from Environment Conservation Group will leave to the flood affected areas in the State for distribution of relief materials. Only disappointment was in store for members of Friends of Police who collected Rs. 1 lakh for flood victims. Its Coimbatore City coordinator S. Senthil Kumar and his team tried handing over a demand draft to the ‘Chief Minister Relief Fund’ to the district administration but the officials informed them that they are yet to get a direction from their higher-ups to collect money, said Mr. Kumar.

Tirupur Staff Reporter adds: Sripuram Trust, formed by different stakeholders in Tirupur knitwear industry, on Thursday commenced sending a truck each of essential items, including food and clothing, for people in Chennai on a daily basis for five days.

“We are sending biscuits, bread, blankets, bed linens, rice, snacks and apparels mobilised from both garment businessmen and from philanthropists for five consecutive days ending on Monday,” T.R. Vijayakumar, coordinator of Sripuram Trust, told The Hindu .

For this, the Trust office-bearers had appealed to donate either in cash, which would be eligible for tax exemptions, or materials.

“Clothes and edible items can be dropped at the three designated points in the city which we have mentioned in our appeal made to the people through social media and through direct contacts,” said Mr. Vijayakumar.
