Heavy rain lashed various parts of the district since Wednesday evening and the good news for drinking water supply managers was that Siruvani Dam recorded 40 mm, though there was no sharp rise in the water level in the dam.
The city saw frayed tempers owing to inundation of colonies. Residents of a colony off Tiruchi Road staged a demonstration on Thursday on the main road, complaining that water entered their houses.
The colony was along Valankulam, a major tank in the city.
Water entered houses at G.M. Nagar, off the Sungam Bypass Road, for the second time this month. With no storm water drainage and the natural drain routes towards a canal blocked by unauthorised constructions, the colony got flooded following heavy rain last night.
The residents were so upset that they wanted to return the house site pattas given to them.
Coimbatore Corporation authorities visited the colony to assess the impact of the rain and work on measures to prevent inundation.
Pools of rain water and sewage formed at various points, including Tiruchi Road (near the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital) and a couple of underpasses. Traffic on Avanashi Road Flyover was hit because of intermittent spells of heavy rain on Thursday.

Mosquito menace
Staff Reporter adds from Tirupur: The district received some prolonged wet spells on Thursday after the rain stayed away for most part of Wednesday.
Since the onset of monsoon, the mosquito menace had worsened in the city and other areas following lethargic anti-larvae operations adopted by the civic bodies.
Within the Corporation limits, the unattended sewage had been causing inconvenience to the public in areas like Mannarai and Kongu Nagar.
Following is the rainfall recorded (in mm) by various rain gauge stations in the last 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m on Thursday: Mulanur – 6; Palladam - 4; Kangeyam - 3.2 and Udumalpet - 2.2.
