Heavy rain battered most parts of the Nilgiris during the weekend, leading to major disruptions, especially in the Pandalur region.

According to the revenue administration, disaster management and mitigation department, the district witnessed more than 540 mm rainfall on Saturday and Sunday morning. Devala received more than 110 mm rain, leading to three minor landslips in the Gudalur and Pandalur regions, while a few trees also got uprooted.

A bridge leading to Cholavayal village from Devalahatti, where more than 80 families reside collapsed due to the rain.

Officials from the State Highways Department cleared the landslips, and traffic flow in Neermattam and Athima Nagar, where the landslips occurred has been restored.

In Udhagamandalam, where the rainfall was considerably less, with only 20 mm recorded, tourists were affected as the Ooty Lake was closed for boating. Similar measures were adopted in the Coonoor Sim’s Park, where boating was temporarily stopped.

Major tourist spots saw unusually low crowds due to the rains.

M. Senthil, a tourist from Bangalore, who was among those hoping to go to the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve on Sunday, said that the rains dissuaded him from venturing too far from hotel room.

Farmers in the district, especially those cultivating crops in low-lying areas where water collects, also reported crop losses.

A house at Cherambadi, in Pandalur, collapsed on Sunday evening.

Police said that the house belonging to Meenakshi, where a family was staying collapsed due to the heavy rain.

One person is said to have suffered minor injuries.
