Heated exchanges between the lone CPI (M) councillor, K. Marappan, and the AIADMK councillors over the alleged irregularities in providing new drinking water supply connections, and demands for uniform allocation of modular toilets, among other issues, dominated the Corporation council meeting proceedings here on Monday. Mr. Marappan pointed out that irregularities are reportedly taking place in providing new drinking water connections to households. Even though Mr. Marappan did not mention any party name or person, S.R. Jayakumar (AIADMK) started connecting some CPI (M) functionaries with the flaws in obtaining the connections in the past.
This infuriated Mr. Marappan resulting in wordy duels between him and the AIAMDK members.
Modular toilets
On the modular toilets planned by the Corporation under ‘Namma toilet scheme’ at an outlay of Rs 3.5 crore, S. Ravichandran (CPI) pointed out that the administration should equally distribute the setting up of such community toilets across the 60 wards.
“As per the present plans, some of the wards are allocated 3 to 4 toilet complexes whereas some wards did not have any,” he said. Another topic that came up for discussion was the delay in constructing the six foot over bridges conceptualised by the Corporation administration.
“Many months have gone since the plan was drafted. The foot over bridges are a necessity in congested places like Pushpa theatre junction, near Old Bus Stand, near New Bus Stand and Corporation office junction,” DMDK and CPI councillors said.
Reacting to a requisition, Mayor Visalakshi Appukutty said the administration would take steps to ensure that the underground sewerage system gets extended to the areas under erstwhile eight village panchayats that got merged with the Corporation limit in the recent years.
