Around 300 participants including senior citizens and students took part in the walkathon held on Sunday to draw attention to the problems faced by the elderly while sharing thoughts on the theme ‘Ageing Gracefully’.
The programme held to mark the International Day of Older Persons (October 1) was organised by the Department of Geriatric Service of G. Kuppusamy Naidu Memorial Hospital and Aarogya Kudumbam Senior Retirement Home.
“A positive outlook towards life is essential to not to be cowed down by the challenges put forth by old age. Finding a rapport with the inner-self is the key to meet the demands of today’s fast-paced and materialistic lifestyle. Making the most of the present and not being over anxious about the future will make life cheerful for the elderly,” said chief guest for the event B.K. Krishnaraj Vanavarayar, chairman of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan.
Octogenarian physician V.P. Subbian was honoured at the function for his contributions to the medical field.
Wellness
Reminding the audience of the need to stay in good spirit, veteran physician and the founder of Coimbatore Humour Society G. Lakshmipathi emphasised the importance of physical and mental wellness. Dr. Lakshmipathi drew attention to the financial insecurity faced by many elderly who gave away their property and money to their family members.
Stressing the importance of physical and mental wellness, director of Aarogya Kudumbam P.C. Raju, in his address, said dedicating time for social service activities to give back to the society during old age would make life meaningful.
“Establishing Forums to address the issues faced by the elderly and implement measures to take care of aged destitutes was the need of the hour,” Dr. Raju said.
Sharing his adventurous experience of parachute jumping during and after his service years, retired Air Commodore M. Vania said that age should not be a barrier in following one’s passion.
The winners of the painting competition organised as part of the Elder’s Day celebration were given prizes. The Hindu was the media partner for the event.
