Gun goes off accidentally; sub-inspector suspended

City Police Commissioner A.K. Viswanathan on Thursday ordered the suspension of Sub-Inspector Manimaran of Armed Reserve after his gun went off accidentally on Wednesday night.

According to police, the Sub-Inspector had returned after hospital guard duty for a bomb blast case convict. While surrendering the weapon, he is said to have removed the ammunition and one of it remained inside the chamber by oversight.

As part of the normal procedure, Manimaran reportedly pulled the trigger and the gun went off. However, none was injured or killed. Holding the sub-inspector guilty for carelessness, he was placed under suspension.

Two girls die

In two other cases, two girls who were injured in a fire, died at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital.

In the first incident Sumithra (14), of Krishnapuram in Singanallur, who suffered burns while lighting the kerosene stove on December 15, died in the late hours of Wednesday.

In another incident, Vanipriya (3) of Podanur SIDCO suffered burns also died on Thursday.

Sentenced to life

Boopathi (35) of Pollachi was awarded life imprisonment for murdering Sulochana (32) on September 28, 2011.

Sulochana who was married and had a 10-year-old daughter worked in a private firm at Pollachi.

The accused who also worked with her was harassing her, due to which he lost his job.

On the said day she got down at Ayampalayam, when the accused who was under hiding hacked her with a sickle and tried to commit suicide.

On Thursday the Coimbatore Court awarded him life sentence and also imposed a fine of Rs. 1,500 on him.

Held on murder charge

Police arrested P. Thangaraj (31) of Pallapalayam, B. Sathish alias Sathish Kumar (26) of Irugur and K. Rajkumar (41) Pallapalayam in Coimbatore district on Thursday after they reportedly confessed their involvement in the murder of 15-year-old Dhanalakshmi of Jameen Uthukuli near Pollachi in 2007.

The police who had earlier registered a girl missing case altered it with sections 364 (kidnapping or abducting in order to murder), 302 (murder) and 201 (concealment of evidence) of the Indian Penal Code.

According to the police, Thangaraj made the girl come on a two-wheeler of Sathish to see him.

The two murdered the girl and buried the body near Sathish’s agricultural land at Pallapalayam, with the help of Rajkumar.
