Even as the City police are fine tuning the Green Corridor system on Avinashi Road, feasibility studies to replicate the system on Tiruchi Road and Mettupalayam Road in a phased manner have begun.
To improve the traffic management system, City Police Commissioner A.K. Viswanathan and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic) T. Senthilkumar recently introduced Green Corridor system on Avinashi Road covering a distance of 11.5 km from the Flyover Junction to Airport.
This system will enable motorists get a green signal at every traffic junction if they travel at an average speed of 45 km.
Solar power
While seeking motorists’ co-operation in maintaining lane discipline and speed limits, the police are now on the job of providing solar power to 11 of the 13 signals on Avinashi Road. Frequent power cuts very nearly tripped the initiative. The Gandhipuram and G.P. Theatre signals on Dr.Nanjappa Road are also being synchronised to ensure smooth traffic flow.
Shyam Jude of city-based Analog and Digital Labs, involved in implementing some of the city traffic reform initiatives of the police, said the next focus would be on the 9 km stretch from Flower Market to Thudialur Junction with 11 signals.
The traffic pattern and likely teething problems are being studied. The signals to be synchronised are Kamarajapuram Junction, Periyasamy Road Junction, Chinthamani Junction, Avanashilingam Home Science College, Azhagesan road, N.S.R. Road Junction, Sai Baba Temple Junction, Housing Unit – Kannappa Nagar Road Junction, G.N. Mills Junction and Thudialur Junction.
Mr. Senthilkumar said that on Tiruchi Road, the system would be studied from Ondipudur Flyover to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital. Though the distance is nearly 11 km, this stretch involved only very few signals such as Singnallur, Ramanathapuram, Sungam Circle, Valankulam Road and Arts College Road intersection.
According to police sources, the system is likely to be introduced before the end of the year.
