Members of Pasumai Pathukappu Sangam observed fast in the city on Sunday to express their displeasure over the felling of roadside trees in many places and to create awareness among the public to grow trees in the backyard.

The forum’s secretary N. Thangaraj said that about 20 trees were axed recently in Sarangadu area in the city in the pretext of road widening.

Re-plant

“This could have been avoided as the road in the locality is wide enough to accommodate the traffic volume.

In circumstances where cutting of trees are unavoidable, the authorities concerned could fell it provided they re-plant an equal number of saplings once the development works are completed,” Mr. Thangaraj added. The fasting activists appealed to the people to plant at least two saplings in their houses, as such small initiatives could significantly increase the green cover in the city.
