Grand alliance against AIADMK will not fructify: Sarathkumar

A grand alliance of parties against the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) in the 2016 Assembly election will not fructify, Samathuva Makkal Katchi founder and Member of Legislative Assembly R. Sarath Kumar said here on Wednesday.

Addressing reporters ahead of a meeting with the party men, he said that too many leaders in the probable coalition had chief ministerial ambitions and even before they could forge an alliance, the election would be over and the AIADMK would return to power.

DMK leader M.K. Stalin distributing wedding invitations was of no political significance, he said in response to a question, adding that the people had seen what the party did when it was in power and what it would be capable of doing if voted to power.

If Chief Minister Jayalalithaa were to contest the R.K. Nagar Assembly seat, which had just fell vacant, she would win hands down.

Slamming the DMK for its double speak on corruption, the actor-politician said that the party had no moral right to preach on corruption as it too was mired in allegations of corruption.

He, however, refused to comment on the allegation of former Telecom Regulatory Authority of India chief Pradip Baijal, who had said that he was threatened when the ground for the 2G scam was being prepared.

He refused to fault the Central Government for the foreign trips the Prime Minister made saying it was for building the image of the country abroad and bringing in investments and he saw nothing wrong in it.

But the Government had failed to fulfil the people’s expectations.

It should also take in account all opinions before finalising the amendments to the land acquisition bill.
