Distribution of special study material targeted at poor performers, subject-wise training for school teachers and deputation of personnel to fill critical vacancies are some of the measures being undertaken by the Department of School Education to ensure schools in Coimbatore achieved cent per cent pass percentage in the public examinations.
Speaking to The Hindu here on Thursday, Chief Educational Officer A. Gnanagowri informed that ‘minimal level material’ modules – which comprised printed material containing important questions and essential points – were circulated to schools. They were to be given to the poor performers to enable them clear the subject.
Further, subject-wise training was also given to Standard X teachers of all the five subjects. It was aimed at training them on educating all kinds of students, identifying and motivating weak students and encouraging toppers to aim for State ranks.
Training
“The training is restricted to Standard X teachers this year, as the teachers handling Plus-Two are busy with the public examination preparations. The Plus-Two teachers will undergo training at the start of the next academic year.”
Another priority measure, she said, was filling up of teacher vacancies in schools through short-term deputation of personnel.
Focus
The results of the ongoing half-yearly examinations would also be analysed and schools with weak performances would be identified and focus given accordingly. These measures were targeted not only at improving last year’s performance but at achieving cent per cent pass in all subjects.
Ms. Gnanagowri informed that in 2012, Coimbatore recorded a pass percentage of 90.2 in Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examination and 91.46 in Plus-Two examinations. During the current year in Coimbatore district, a total of 35,308 students are taking the Standard X half-yearly examinations and another 35,348 students, the Plus-Two examinations.
