Goods shed workers seek shifting of facility to Irugur

May 20, 2014 10:46 am | Updated 10:46 am IST - COIMBATORE:

The federation of workers employed at the Railway goods sheds at Irugur have appealed to the Railways and to the Police to shift the goods shed at North Coimbatore to Irugur.

According to Irugur Railway Goods Shed Workers’ Federation convener D. Senthil Raj, about 180 workers are employed at the Irugur railway goods shed for loading and unloading the goods. Maize, wheat, soya, and cement are some of the major products that are handled there.

The Irugur goods shed is operational from 2002 and there is another railway goods shed at North Coimbatore. Nearly 60 workers are employed at the North Coimbatore goods shed.

Shifting the North Coimbatore facility to Irugur will help the companies and reduce the traffic congestion inside the city.

It is easier to transport the goods from Irugur to nearby towns such as Pollachi. It is also easier for the workers to handle the goods if the entire facility is at one location.

Mr. Senthil Raj has said in a press release that the Irugur facility is used by companies to transport pig iron, poultry feed, fertilizers, and soda.

Vehicles are able to move without creating traffic congestions.

Workers of both the facilities work at Irugur. Hence, the facilities should be integrated at one location, at Irugur, he said.
