There was a good potential for technical textiles in the country but players in the industry will have to equip themselves for the same, said Shashi Singh, Executive Director,Indian Technical Textile Association.

Speaking at the inauguration of the ICIC 2014 Indo-Czech International Conference, organised by the Kumaraguru College of Technology and Technical University of Liberec, Czech Republic, she said that technical textiles had a market of around Rs. 14 billion.

Demand Most of this market was overseas because the per capita use of technical textiles was 16.5 kg in the US and 12 kg in Europe. In India, it was a mere 1.7 kg.

ITTA worked closely with the Central Government to make mandatory the use of air bags in cars, geotextiles and agrotextiles as it would push up the demand for technical textiles. Shankar Vanavarayar, Joint Correspondent, KCT, said Coimbatore needed to reinvent itself just as Manchester had changed itself a few years ago.

Partnership He also said that the institution had entered into a strategic partnership with the Czech Republic and that would change the way textiles were manufactured in Coimbatore.
