A day after Coimbatore Corporation highlighted the good performance of its students in higher secondary examinations, it showcased its achievements in education on Saturday.
The platform was ‘Nam Palli - Sigarathai Noki', a programme organised at the Corporation Kalaiarangam, R. S. Puram.
In the presence of Mayor R. Venkatachalam and Commissioner Ansul Mishra, the civic body told the public what it had achieved in the past year.
Corporation Education Officer S. Somasundari said the aim of the programme was to inform parents and also public that the 26 corporation schools offered good, affordable education. It was also to tell them that the schools had attained considerable improvement in quality of education and also infrastructure.
Mr. Mishra said people for long had been labouring under a misconception that corporation schools were bad and the quality of education they extended was poor.
“Now we want to tell them it is wrong and that the schools are on a par with their private counterparts.”
“This is the first time that the civic body is holding such a programme,” he added.
Stalls put up at the exhibition reflected the effort taken in the past year.
They also showcased what the civic body proposed to do in the next couple of years.
The corporation had conducted programmes for students' overall development and that included sessions for personality, communication development and career guidance.
Mr. Venkatachalam said the civic body was preparing the students to face challenges in the future. “The schools are undergoing complete change – modern toilets, computer labs, classrooms with projectors are being added.”
The education officer said the fruits of the year-long efforts were for everybody to see.
As many as 17 of the 50 top rank holders from corporation schools in the State, were from Coimbatore.
Not only that, in sports and extra curricular activities too the students had performed really well, it was pointed out at the meeting.
“A student participated in the national level volley ball tournament,” she said.
The latest in the effort was the setting up of evening study centres.
Three more such centres – one each for south, east and north zones would soon be started.
