Goat units for Tirupur

March 09, 2013 12:21 pm | Updated 12:21 pm IST - Tirupur:

Department of Animal Husbandry is all set to introduce a project to enhance the production of protein-rich animal products in Tirupur district.

The scheme will be implemented with funding support from the corpus created under National Mission for Protein Supplement.

To achieve the objectives, 72 ‘goat units’ will be supplied free to members of eight women Self Help Groups (SHGs) spread over Tirupur, Dharapuram and Udumalpet blocks and the beneficiaries will also be given financial assistance to construct sheds to lodge the goats.

Each ‘goat unit’ will have nine ‘does’ (female goats) and one ‘buck’ (male goat).

“Introduction of the scheme is not only going to augment the intake of nutrient supplements by the people but also provides higher income to rural women who are to be given the free goats,” Joint Director of Animal Husbandry K. M. Sivaprakasham told The Hindu .

R. Selvaraj, head of Tirupur unit of Veterinary University Training and Research Centre, said free concentrated feed would be given at the rate of 250 gm per goat per day using the funds from NMPS so as to ensure that goats were healthy and give maximum milk and meat.
