A training programme on glaucoma was organised here on Saturday for medical officers and secondary officers of primary health centres (PHCs) in the district by the Department of Public Health.

Deputy Director of Public Health R. Damodaran said that glaucoma was among the top causes for blindness and visual impairment. More than 80 per cent of visual impairment was due to preventable causes.

Speaking earlier, S. Padma from the Coimbatore Glaucoma Foundation, said that if a family member had glaucoma, the chances of acquiring it increased by four to nine times.

Around 130 medical officers and second level officers from PHCs in the district took part.
