A group of 320 families who have put up huts on a poromboke land at Saravanampatti petitioned District Collector M. Karunagaran during the public grievances redress meeting on Monday, asking him to evict encroachers in the area and grant patta to them.

They said they had been residing on a 3.5 acre piece of land near Amman Kovil Bus stop for over two decades and have frequently petitioned the district administration seeking patta.

Recently a commercial building has come up on the poromboke land. This should be removed, they said.

Railway land

A group of people representing 50 families who had put up huts on a piece of land belonging to Salem Division of Southern Railways petitioned the Collector asking him to prevent their eviction.

They said many of them come under the Below Poverty Line category. They had been residing at the piece of land on Ward 33 of Mettupalayam Municipality for over 75 years and had no other place to go.

On February 11, railway officials sent them notices asking them to vacate the land.

They said many of their children were appearing for the public examinations of Standard X and Plus-Two now. Their studies would be affected if they were forced to move out.

Compensation

A group of residents from Nanjundapuram petitioned the Collector to provide information on the quantum of land being taken over for constructing a railway bridge there and the compensation amount they were entitled to.

They said notices were served on them on March 8 giving them 30 days time to vacate the land.
