Nineteen-year-old Vanitha of Valparai drowned in a rivulet in the hills on Wednesday while attempting to rescue her 14-year-old sister Selvi, who fell into the water body while washing clothes. Their uncle Palanichamy, who rescued Selvi, is feared dead. A hunt is on for his body.
According to the Valparai police, Vanitha and Selvi went to the rivulet near their residence in the Nalakathu Tea Estate to wash clothes and have a bath. While washing clothes, Selvi lost balance and fell into the rivulet, which, on Wednesday had a good flow.
Seeing her sister being carried away by the rivulet, Vanitha jumped in. Residents of the area, who noticed the sisters struggling in the fast-moving water, raised cries for help. Their uncle Palanichamy, who was nearby, jumped into the water and rescued Selvi.
He again jumped into the rivulet to rescue Vanitha but could not. Her body was found a little later. Meanwhile, Fire and Rescue Services personnel, police and Revenue Department personnel rushed to the spot.
At the time of filing the report, the Fire and Rescue Services personnel in Valparai said that a hunt was on.
Vanitha pursued her nursing in a private college in Dharapuram and Selvi was a Class Nine student in the Government Higher Secondary School in Valparai.
