Government Arts College began general counselling for admission to undergraduate courses on Tuesday. It will go on till June 22. Counselling for those under special quota was held on Monday.

According to co-ordinator of admissions K. Shanmuga Sundaram, candidates are being called in batches from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. based on the cut-off marks that has been calculated for 800 marks for all subjects other than English and Tamil.

The rank list was hosted on the college website and is also available on the college notice board. The college also sent out call letters bearing details and a photograph of the candidates.

It started receiving filled-in applications from May 27, the day the original Plus Two mark sheets were issued. As many as 10,276 applications were sold. Out of this, 5,751 filled-in applications were received.

All are being called for the single window counselling. More than 50 per cent of these are girls.

There are 1, 319 seats available in 20 undergraduate courses. As is the case every year, many eligible girl candidates were denied seats because of the 30:70 ratio of girls and boys. The college, originally meant for boys, was allowed to admit girls in the 30 per cent ratio only after 1996. Since then, girls are admitted under this reservation for all departments.

Day one of general counselling saw the toppers choose B. Com., B.Com. (Computer Applications), English and Tamil. A total of 278 candidates were admitted on Tuesday.
