Industrial estates in Coimbatore are looking at projects that will help the units in energy conservation, use renewable energy, and adopt environment-friendly measures.
For instance, the Coimbatore SIDCO Industrial Estate Manufacturers’ Welfare Association is exploring the possibility of having natural gas pipeline to the units at the industrial estate from a common facility at the estate.
Association secretary M. V. Loganathan told The Hindu on Thursday that the Gas Authority of India (GAIL) has given a proposal that it could set up a gas bullet (storage tank) at the industrial estate. Individual pipelines could be set up for the units and meters installed. Industries at the SIDCO industrial estate here used natural gas for several purposes. These could be supplied from the common storage tank and could also be used to run the generators. The cost of operating the generators was likely to reduce by 40 per cent from the existing rate.
The industrial estate had nearly 300 units – small, medium and large-scale. Several members had evinced interest in the project. The association has also identified about half-an-acre at the estate to set up the storage tank. “We are following up the project,” he said.
The Coimbatore Industrial Infrastructure Association has developed three industrial parks here. It is now looking at setting up a sand reclamation plant as a common facility. Interested units could go in for solar systems individually, says its president N. Visvanathan.
The Coimbatore District Small Industries’ Association, which plans a couple of industrial parks here, will have green energy initiatives at the parks.
