Ganja seized in Coimbatore; two held

Special teams of the Coimbatore City Police formed to probe into ganja usage among college students on Wednesday arrested two persons and recovered about 11 kg of the drug and Rs. 25,000 from them.

Following reports about availability of ganja among college students, City Police Commissioner A.K. Viswanathan and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) T. Pravesh Kumar formed special teams.

Teams under the supervision of Assistant Commissioner of Police A. Murugasamy and Inspector C. Karthikeyan rounded up two persons based on a tip-off and found 11 kg of ganja in their possession, besides cash. Police identified the two as R. Ramesh (37) of Ondipudur and Sura alias S. Suresh (38) of Ammankulam in Puliakulam. Further probe is on.

Chain-snatching incidents

In the last 24 hours, Coimbatore city witnessed four incidents of chain-snatching.

It is learnt that Shoba (32) of Azhagesan Road in Sai Baba Colony, who was walking along the road, was intercepted by two motorcycle-borne accused and was relieved of her 3.5 sovereign gold chain.

Around same time, another woman Rajaselvi (53), who was walking along the Narayana Guru Road in the same police station limits, was relieved of 5.5 sovereign jewellery.

Police are also probing into reports of another woman Soundaram (67), who was reportedly relieved of 10 sovereigns of jewellery.

Police suspect the motorcycle-borne accused to be the same in all the cases.

Porkodi (40) of Sungam in Ramanathapuram police station limits who was walking along the road was relieved of two sovereign gold jewellery. Special teams have been formed to apprehend the accused.
