Though the exact amount is yet to be confirmed, police sources said it could be Rs. 70 lakh
Coimbatore rural police has formed four special teams to inquire into a petition received by the Sulur Police on Sunday, alleging that two youth of Malapuram in Kerala were attacked by a gang of 10 unidentified persons and were robbed of their money. Though the exact amount is yet to be confirmed, police sources said it could be Rs. 70 lakh.
It is learnt that A. Rashid (21) and his friend Riyaz (20) were travelling from Erode to Malapuram in a four-wheeler (KL-65-T-9142) with the money on Saturday.
“They claimed that the gang came in another car and overtook their vehicle near Annur, around 11.45 p.m. on Saturday,” Superintendent of Police (SP) of Coimbatore Rural M. Sudhakar said.
The police said that according to the petition, the gang had attacked the two and drove away with their car and money.
“Based on a petition received from the youth, the Sulur Police alerted other police stations in the vicinity and found the car on Sunday with a damaged windshield in a village bordering the forest areas at Palladam in Tirupur district”, he said.
“While the bag which contained the money was found in the car, the cash was missing. The youth gave contradictory statements on the amount that they had in the vehicle and the source of the money. Further inquiries are on,” Mr. Sudhakar concluded.
