The Vinayaka Chathurthi celebrations in the district came to a close with idols of Lord Ganesha kept at public places were immersed by the devotees in various water bodies on Wednesday evening.

On the day, around 600 idols out of the total 1,085 erected at public places this year were immersed at five places after they were taken out in processions. The others were immersed on Monday and Tuesday.

A large contingent of police was deployed along the routes through which the processions passed before the idols were dipped in the canals/water bodies at Tirupur, Udumalpet, Dharapuram and near Avinashi.

On Wednesday afternoon, prior to the commencement of the procession, a pair of youth got married in front of one of the idols kept near the New Bus Stand in the city.
