The free drop service for post-natal mothers after institutional delivery was launched at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) on Monday. The service was flagged off by District Collector T.N. Hariharan.
The drop service is operated under Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakram (JSSK) of the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare under the National Health Mission (NHM). The service will be operated with the assistance of ‘102’ helpline.
CMCH authorities said that post-natal mothers with newborns will be given free drop facility up to 40km from the hospital when they are discharged after institutional delivery.
“The service will also be made available when the mother takes the child to the hospital for immunisation. The service will be available up to one year from the date of delivery,” said R. Soundravel, Resident Medical Officer, CMCH.
Following the inauguration of the service, first batches of mothers and newborns were given the free drop service on Monday.
The drop service will be a boon to poor people who depend on private vehicles for transportation at the time of discharge.
On an average, 30 to 40 institutional deliveries are taking place at Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (CEmONC) ward of CMCH per day. According to officials, 10 to 15 post-natal mothers are discharged from the hospital after delivery every day.
