Fort TNHB residents to stage dharna

February 07, 2011 05:06 pm | Updated October 08, 2016 06:51 pm IST - Coimbatore:

The Coimbatore Fort Tamil Nadu Housing Residential Welfare Co-ordination Committee will hold a demonstration on February 7 demanding immediate handing over of the dwelling units constructed on Vincent Road in Fort area of Ukkadam.

The demonstration is the latest in the string of protests over the reconstruction of 352 dwelling units that were pulled down after parts of it collapsed on October 19, 2007, killing 13 people.

Decision

The February 7 dharna is following the committee's decision to take to the streets if the Government did not hand over the finished apartments to the beneficiaries by January 30.

Rental arrears

The target beneficiaries are those living below poverty line and are struggling even for their daily livelihood. The beneficiaries have even paid their rental arrears for the last 35 years.

The office-bearers said that the Chief Minister, who was announcing welfare schemes for the last four years for all sections, was not paying attention on this issue.
