The Nilgiris North Forest Division has opened stalls to provide drinking water to thirsty tourists. These have come up at all major tourist spots where Eco-Development Committee activities are taking place, including Kunjapanai, Kalhatti checkpost, Doddabetta and Lamb's Rock.

S Kalanidhi, District Forest Officer (Nilgiris North Division), said the forest department had planned to put up the stalls as there were drinking water shortages across the district. “We wanted to help tourists have a comfortable stay, and also avoid hawkers charging exorbitant prices for water bottles,” said Mr. Kalanidhi.

The move has also ensured that plastic is managed effectively in the tourist locations. The water from the stalls is handed out to visitors in plastic glasses, which are disposed off right at the spot itself in garbage cans, and the waste is disposed of properly.
