In a bid to create a healthy society free from drug abuse, the district administration organised a rally and a workshop based on the theme of ‘Global action for healthy communities without drugs’ here on Tuesday.

The events were part of the observance of ‘International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking’.

The students and self-help group members, who participated in the rally, carried placards with messages of how illicit drugs posed danger to the society.

Flagging off the rally, Collector M. Mathivanan called upon the youth to exhibit determination and extend cooperation for achieving the goal of society free of drug abuse.

“Drug abuse, which means, intake of drugs for reasons other than for medical purposes, causes severe damage to health of a person and thus, such acts need to be considered as a menace to be eradicated in the bud,” he said.

Officials from the police, revenue, health and excise departments took part.
