Officials of the Central Excise and Commercial Tax departments and members of trade and industry cut a cake in Coimbatore on Saturday to mark the launch of GST.

The Office of the Commissioner of GST (earlier known as Office of the Commissioner of Central Excise, Customs and Service Tax) here will focus for next three months on hand-holding the trade and industry, according to Commissioner J. Kumaresh.

He told reporters here on Saturday that the Commissionerate has conducted outreach and training programmes for the industry and officials. “We will focus on servicing the industry.” There will be no enforcement during the transition period. Service centres have been opened at the offices of the Commissionerate here and at Pollachi, Tirupur and Coonoor. While those who were already assessees of VAT, Central Excise, or Service Tax are migrating to the new tax system, new assessees have started registering since June 25. There are many who were unsure whether they need to register or not as their annual turnover was less than ₹ 20 lakh. Now, these businesses have also started registering, he said.

Earlier, a function was organised with members of the trade and industry to mark the launch of GST.
