Efforts are on to complete the Pilloor Phase II drinking water scheme in 10 months from now, as already eight out of the total project period of 18 months have elapsed, Mayor R. Venkatachalam said here on Sunday.
After reviewing the construction of a water tank with a capacity to hold three million litres of water, the Mayor said 40 per cent of the works had been completed. These included laying the main lines, the city-level internal distribution lines and the construction of overhead tanks. The works of all these three components were at various stages, the Mayor said.
Mr. Venkatachalam said he and Deputy Mayor N. Karthik reviewed the works on Sunday to check whether everything was being done as per specifications. “We will carry out an inspection every three days because it is important that the scheme is completed before the next summer. Only then can we provide the promised 24-hour supply of drinking water,” he said.
The phase one scheme now provided nearly 65 million litres a day (mld). The second phase would provide 63 mld. And, 75 per cent of this might go to the north and east zones that faced a shortage now.
“There is a rise in the number of protests by people in these areas to demand proper supply of water. They complain that they are not getting their due quota of water because of frequent disruptions,” he said.
Pointing out that Siruvani water could not be provided beyond a certain point in the eastern section of the city, the Mayor said the Corporation was looking at alternatives to overcome shortage. “We will sink bore wells wherever necessary so that Pilloor water is used only for drinking or cooking purpose. The bore well water can be used for other purposes,” he said.
“We cannot provide Siruvani water to Ondipudur as it is located in the eastern end of the city. Siruvani water is for the western section. Only when there is a disruption in the Pilloor supply, Siruvani water is provided in the deficit areas of east or north zones. Therefore, the completion of the phase two scheme within the stipulated period is vital to providing uninterrupted supply,” the Mayor said.
