The district got five more veterinary dispensaries and the first set of four fodder depots to augment animal husbandry activities.

The entire facilities were dedicated to the public by Minister for Animal Husbandry T.K.M.Chinnayya at a function held near here on Saturday.

The new veterinary dispensaries commissioned were located at Pappampalayam (Uthukuli block), Mondipalayam (Avinashi block), Putherichal (Pongalur block), Puthupey (Vellakoil block) and Thumbalapatti (Kundadam block).

“With the opening of these units, the total number of veterinary dispensaries in the district had gone up to 89 including the sole mobile dispensary functioning near Udumalpet,” official sources said. The new dispensaries would be concentrating on fodder development activities, vaccinations and de-worming in animals.

Animal husbandry department officials said the four fodder depots introduced in the district were situated at Kangayam, Mulanur, Valavadi and Chengapalli.

“Paddy straw will be distributed through these depots at the rate of Rs 2 a kg. A farmer, registered with any of the depot, can get up to a total of 105 kgs of straw in a week for five cattle,” officials added.

The department had constituted committees of officials at the depot level to streamline the distribution of paddy straw.
