Five persons were killed and more than 10 injured when the roof of a bus stand at Somanur in Coimbatore rural collapsed on Thursday afternoon.

Two of the five deceased have been identified as Sivakumar (35), conductor of TNSTC bus, and Dharani (20), third year degree student. Thulasi (40), a resident of Kulathupalayam near Somanur, succumbed to injuries at Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH).

According to police, the incident happened around 2 p.m. More than 20 persons were trapped under the roof that collapsed unexpectedly, also damaging the front portion of a TNSTC bus.

Seven injured, including TNSTC driver Shanmugham (45), have been admitted to CMCH. Five others are being treated at a private hospital. Efforts are on to rescue others with assistance from fire and rescue personnel and public, police said.

More than 10 ambulances are deployed to shift the injured to hospitals, oOfficials with emergency medical services provider GVK EMRI said

Located in the border of Coimbatore and Tirupur districts, Somanur had received heavy showers in the last one week.
