Five persons were arrested for allegedly assaulting an assistant headmaster of a government school near here, police said today.

According to police, parents and relatives of a student assaulted the teacher, after he had allegedly beat the boy for playing with a live switchboard in an under construction school building.

C N Manoharan, the assistant headmaster, found the 11th standard student fiddling with the switchboard in the building on October 28, reprimanded him and reportedly beat him up, they said.

The boy reported the matter to his parents, who along with three of their relatives, accosted Mr. Manoharan the next day as he was entering the school and beat him up, they said.

Mr. Manoharan was taken to a government hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile locals who came to know of the attack on the teacher, resorted to a road block, demanding the arrest of the culprits.
