Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedics and Spine Surgery at Ganga Hospital in Coimbatore S. Rajasekaran has been conferred the honorary fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons, London.
The fellowship was conferred on him in Bangalore on May 13 by President of the college John Black, in the presence of the College Council.
Citation
Quoting from the citation, the hospital said the fellowship was given in recognition of Dr. Rajasekaran's pioneering research in accidents and spine surgery and for his contribution in bring international standards of care in orthopaedics to India.
The release said Dr. Rajasekaran was already a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
Academic merit
The honorary fellowship was given to a limited number of individuals of outstanding academic merit, or other outstanding contributions to the profession. The citation mentioned that Dr. Rajasekaran pioneered state-of-art technology in orthopaedics and spine surgery, contributing to world literature in the following areas such as management of severely injured limbs, computer navigated spine surgery and spinal deformity surgery.
Research work
The research work of his unit at Ganga Hospital had secured many national and international awards including the prestigious International Society for the Study of Lumbar Spine (ISSLS), Canada Spine Research Award twice - 2004 and 2010.
It also won the Eurospine Award in 2008.
At the national level, he was honoured with the Medical Council of India awards such as the Silver Jubilee Research Award and the Hari Om Ashram Alembic Research Award and also the Tamil Nadu Government Scientist Award.
President-elect
Dr. Rajasekaran was the president of the World Orthopaedic Concern for three years and now the president-elect of the ISSLS and Computer-Assisted Orthopaedic Society.
