Construction of a culvert across Sanganoor Road, near Roots Industries, by the Coimbatore Corporation has troubled Sivasakthi Colony residents. The distance between the place of construction and the Sivasakthi Colony is at least two km.
Ward 47 Councillor P.V. Subramanian says that the culvert will establish a link between the drain on the southern side of Sanganoor Road with the new drain that the Corporation is constructing on the northern side and that will lead to increased flow of water or sewage.
And that is something unacceptable to the Sivasakthi Colony residents because they suffer inundation whenever it rains in Kavundampalayam, Sanganoor, Kannappan Nagar, Periasamy Layout, Kanagipuram and Raja Street.
Connection
If the Corporation were to connect the drains by constructing the culvert, the situation will turn worse because the locality with be under knee-deep water.
K. Anitha, a resident of 35 years, says that rainwater or sewage flows like a river on the road whenever it rains in the aforementioned areas because the drain carries the water from those localities and discharges it into Sivasakthi Colony.
The water also floods the track near the Avarampalayam railway crossing and also the gatekeeper’s room. For, there is no discharge point. The water gets stagnated there and there is a reverse flow.
Mr. Subramanian says that the Corporation ought to take the water beneath the railway track to drain it out in the natural drain a few yards away. But that has not happened. It is the residents’ demand.
He adds that the he has raised the issue with the Mayor S.M. Velusamy and Commissioner G. Latha asking them to stop the culvert work. They have visited the spot and promised action.
As of now the work has stopped and the residents will get agitated if it were to resume.
Sources in the Corporation say that they will study the issue and take a decision in this regard.
