To draw the attention of the district administration towards cruelty to cattle, animal welfare activists observed a fast at Gandhipuram here on Friday.

Over 100 members participated in the fast to protest against illegal transportation and slaughtering of cows.

P.R. Krishnakumar Warrier, managing director of Arya Vaidya Pharmacy and president of Go Grama Seva Samithi and K.K. Payal, secretary of the Samithi, Kalpana Vasudevan, secretary of People for Animals Unit II, Swami Kumaragurupara, Kolamara Muttalayam and G.K.S Selvakumar, coordinator, were present.

According to Ms. Vasudevan, there had been incidents of pregnant cows, and calves being caught when they were being transported to neighbouring States through Coimbatore district.

The participants demanded that the legislations to prevent cruelty to animals should be implemented effectively and the culprits should be punished. The members complained that calves were being sold for meat at places such as Thudiyalur. They urged the district administration to ensure that the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, a district-level body to take care of animal welfare, worked effectively.
